Alternator to Electric Motor - Pulley Removal

Anyone have any tricks to getting the pulley off the alternator?

Tried several screw drivers holding the fan blades and wrecked the fan blades.
Everyone on YT just uses a power tool/impact tool, nothing shown how to use muscles.

Two bolts, one small 10mm on top, the larger is 20mm

I am going to hit the junk yard again, but this time get the pulley off while its on the block and the belt is attached.

My plan is to have a rusted out p.o.s. bicycle that I can use and go to the movie theater, big mall, downtown, whatever and not have second thoughts about my ebike. Of course I'd have a removable battery, and its going to be a Unit Pack Power dolphin.

I am going to go out of my way to find the nastiest bicycle to use, then just get some basic components like Shimano Tourney TX stuff. Want to see how much power the alternator wired as a motor will produce, so I am going for a big 1 ton truck alternator, might do two but weight is a factor.

Just keep in mind you have to convert the alternator into a motor first; it's not as simple as just wiring it to a controller. There's a bunch of threads on doing that; dunno if any are complete.

Impact driver of some sort is really your friend for a job like that. Hold the pulley with a strap wrench, give it a hit with the impact gun and it'll spin out of there. You can even use a manual impact driver like this:

A little more work, give it a few knocks with that and then grab it with the strap and a normal ratchet/socket.

So the problem is removing the nut that is holding the pulley, not removing the pulley (after the nut is removed)?
Usually there is some way to hold the shaft while loosening the nut. Something like an allen key at the end of the shaft.

Oh yeah, gotta have one.

I bought a big mean Makita one from a garage sale pretty cheap about 20 years ago, having no idea what I'd ever use it for. A few years later I was in a fight with an exhaust manifold bolt, bleeding a little and not winning at all.

Then I remembered the big blue beast in the bottom drawer of the tool chest. Victory was mine inside a minute.

I am giving up on the alternator motor idea. I hit the junk yard today, most pulley bolts were larger then 22mm, atleast for the truck section, probably 24mm or 7/8'ths. I did see one alt on the ground, but the back electronics layed in a pool of water, not that that matters, but I couldnt tell if the water hit the windings, plus the little bit of windings I could see looked dark. Also the two vehicles with belts still on, everything would rotate. Saving my money.

I figure I will drill a hole in the cover plates to fit a U-lock, making sure the hole lines up in between the stampings. Gorilla tape to cover, or a large magnet because of the heat. Means I gotta carry around two U-locks.

Now I need a shitty ole, rusted, bicycle thats been abandoned.

I wouldn't use an actual shitty rusty bike. I'd want to bike to still be safe.

I'd shitty one up artificially using cocoa powder or something similar like this:
You might also consider repainting with enamel and a paint brush. Be sure to induce plenty of drips.
That should convince people that the bike is worthless.

Multiple random colors of spray paint over different parts of it works ok, too. (the "millenium falcon look")


Some poeple splatter oil (or thick lacquer, etc) on the bike, then throw dirt and ground up rusty iron filings and other junk on it. Once there's enough crap you can use spray on clearcoat, matte type so it isnt' all shiny, to keep the crap on there (mostly).
