I am looking for a replacement 36v battery for my 14 year old home built ebike. I built 2 of these bikes and both are still on their original batteries and motors. I originally fitted a 10 ah 36v Ping battery but it unfortunately the charger is cutting out at 42v and then battery voltage drops off so fast the charger comes back on almost instantly. So the cells don't balance and the charger will soon burn out . The bike does very little mileage at the moment but my wife uses it to go 1/2 mile backwards and forwards to work every day. I got excellent service from Ping but unfortunately he's a billionaire now so he no longer makes ebike batteries. its unlikely I will get service like that from another battery . I dont need a frame mounted battery. My Ping is just cells in shrink wrap. My motor is a brushed Heinzmann 36v with a max of about 30 amps. I don't think I want to build my own pack but I do want genuine cells and a reliable BMS. What are people using these days ?

Looks like both you and Ping (especially) did pretty damn good. How about some pics of your bike and Ping battery (with physical dimensions) so people can give you replacement suggestions?

If you think the battery is still good, consider instead buying a Grin Satiator charger. You can configure it for whatever charging cycle you want, and you'd have it for any other batteries you might have as well.

The battery and speed controller, cut off switch, Watts up etc are all in a strong plasic box on a rack over the rear wheel. If I had a frame mounted battery this would all need relocating. Its a front wheel motor making the cable a reasonably straight run. I think a shrink wrapped cell battery would be my best option. I could replace the box if necessary. I use a Heinzmann brushed front wheel motor with a specially adapted disc brake mounted to it, 4qd speed controller (British company) , Magura throttle, Ping Battery,

I thought of saturation charging.
What is "saturation charging"?

Given the condition fo the battery and the results of charging so far, and it's age, it is unlikely to help. Most likley there are pouches in the Ping pack that have simply aged out or failed, though it could be interconnect issues instead or in addition. While the satiator is a good charger (i have one and it is quite useful) I don't think it's the right answer for this problem.

But how *big* is this space? That's the question that was asked and must be answered for us to help you find a pack that will fit it. Otherwise we have to make suggestions that you then must go thru and filter out based on a factor we could have eliminated to start with. ;)

That said, you might want to look at used EV modules such as those at greentecauto, batteryhookup, etc. They exist in a large range of voltages, capacities, and shapes, and some are reconfigurable to better match an application. Because of their design and QC at manufacture, they are likely to last much longer than any cheap ebike pack you get, and will probably cost less. They won't come with a BMS or charger, but those are easy enough to choose and acquire.

4qd speed controller (British company)
You're the only other person I've ever known using one of their controllers; I used a 2QD built from one of their PCBs and parts I had laying around for early versions of CrazyBike2 to run powerchair motors as a chain drive. :)
